Studio Notes – materials, craftsmanship and feeling
"For us, the cushion is a central part of how a room is experienced. It adds not only colour and pattern, but also texture, depth and comfort. We work with natural materials such as linen, bouclé and OEKO-TEX® certified cotton velvet, chosen for their quality and ability to age beautifully over time. Each cushion is developed with a focus on balance – between simplicity and expression, and between craftsmanship and modern design."
– Stig Jonsson, Creative Director
Styling with cushions – create a balanced and personal interior
Cushions are one of the easiest ways to change the feeling of a room. By combining colours, patterns and materials, you can create either a calm and harmonious look or a more vibrant and personal expression.
How to choose cushions for your sofa
At Chhatwal & Jonsson, we see cushions as a way to add colour, pattern and life to a space. By mixing different patterns and textures, you can create a layered but balanced result. Combine solid cushions with patterned ones, and let colours reappear in different shades to create a sense of cohesion. Mixing materials such as linen, velvet and bouclé adds depth and a more dynamic feel.
Create a considered whole
Let colour, pattern and material work together to create a cohesive look. By combining linen, velvet and bouclé in recurring tones and designs, you achieve a style that feels both thoughtful and personal. Our cushions are designed to be easy to combine, so you can create a look that feels balanced and individual.
Complete the look – combine with other textiles
For a cohesive interior, match your cushions with other textiles in your home. Our cushions work naturally together with handwoven rugs and other interior details, making it easy to create a unified and harmonious style.
FAQ – choosing the right cushions
What filling should I choose for the best look?
At Chhatwal & Jonsson, we recommend inner cushions with down or feather filling for a fuller and more natural feel. They shape easily and give a more premium look. If you prefer a firmer option, synthetic filling also works well.
What size inner cushion should I choose?
Our cushion covers are designed to fit standard inner cushions. Choose a 50 x 50 cm inner cushion for 50 x 50 cm covers, and 40 x 60 cm for 40 x 60 cm covers.
How many cushions do I need for my sofa?
This depends on the size of your sofa. We usually recommend - 3–5 cushions for a smaller sofa and 5–7 cushions for a larger sofa. Mixing different sizes creates a more dynamic look.
How do I match cushions that work well together?
At Chhatwal & Jonsson, we work with colour and pattern as a whole. We recommend repeating colours in different shades and combining solid and patterned cushions to create balance.
Which cushions suit a beige or grey sofa?
Neutral sofas are the perfect base for working with colour and pattern. Beige and grey tones make it easy to combine different shades and create a lively yet balanced look.
A simple tip is to pick up colours from other elements in the room, such as rugs, artwork or other textiles.
Can your cushions be used outdoors?
Yes, we offer a dedicated collection of outdoor cushions designed for exterior use. These are made from cotton with a water-repellent coating and taped seams to protect against light rain.
We recommend bringing them indoors during heavy rain to maintain quality over time.
Is an inner cushion included?
No, our cushion covers are sold without inner cushions. For best results, use a standard inner cushion in the same size as the cover.
Which material should I choose – linen, velvet or bouclé?
We use different materials to create variation and depth in interiors. Combining materials gives a more layered and balanced look.
Linen offers a relaxed and natural feel
Velvet adds richness and a more luxurious character
Bouclé creates texture and a soft, tactile surface
